This week's episode of Dexter managed to address the final loose ends of the fourth season's traumatic ending, namely in reference to Rita's children. A major portion of the episode addressed this awkward issue, and culminated in a confontation with Dexter in the bathroom where Rita was murdered.
But i'll get back to that in a moment.
Looking at the episode as a whole, four significant events occured during the fifty minute run. First off the bat, i'd like to address Dexter and his search for a new target to kill - that came in the form of Boyd Fowler, a serial killer who scrapes up roadkill for a living. Although nothing much occured on this front, it was good to see Dexter on the prowl again after a nine month wait. We will have to wait and see where this particular plot point leads, although it will most likely result in the death of another serial killer. But, knowing Showtime, they always seem to have a twist waiting in the wings.

Secondly, Batista's barfight with another officer was particularly interesting. The fight commenced after another Seargaent insulted LaGuerta to Batista's face, although, Batista's earlier argument with LaGuerta in regards to their different finances could have also been part of the reason that Batista snapped so violently. Although the aftermath of that fight was not revealed in this episode, i suspect that it will be strongly addressed in the next episode. It was quite an unexpected event to occur, particularly on Batista's part, but it was interesting to see his character involved in something by himself instead of with LaGuerta for a change. It's only a matter of time before she finds out though.
Thirdly, Quinn and Debra's relationship seemed to have taken a step forward during this episode, as Debra called Quinn and admitted that she and Quinn had engaged in sex (after spending a majority of the previous episode denying what had occured). Although not much happened on this front, it is a step, albeit a tiny one, forward for the Deb/Quinn relationship storyline. Speaking of Quinn, his investigation into Kyle Butler took a significant step forward in this episode, as he recieved three pictures from his FBI contact of images of the suspect as taken from the Mitchell family. After comparing them side by side, he put the three of them together and came up with - a rough picture of Dexter Morgan. It seems that Quinn's investigation is well underway now, and i can honestly say that i cannot wait to see where this storyline heads to. Since we still have ten episodes to go, it is a sure bet that the writers will draw out this storyline for a while, but it certainly will be interesting to see Quinn and Dexter come head to head.

Finally, i would like to readdress my earlier comments regarding Astor and Cody. I think it was a bold move by the writers to send the kids off for now, as i honestly cannot see any good storylines taking place if they stayed around. However, one can also argue that it was a cheap tactic by the writers to 'shuffle' away the kids for good. I sincerely hope that the writers bring back the kids later on in the season, as the show won't be quite the same without them. But, alas, only time will tell what is in store for the season.
Overall, these are my final marks for the episode:
- Potency of the season's theme(s) identified in the episode: *********
- Editing & Scenes of Relevence: **********
- Lead characters connection with audience/actors effectiveness in role: *******
- Secondary characters connection with audience/actors effectiveness in role: *******
- Music & Visual Effects: *******
- Originality and appeal of the episode's narrative: *******
- Integration and effectiveness of multiple story arcs and character relationships: *******
Overall Mark: 54 / 70
Grade Percentage: 77%
All in all, this week's episode of Dexter was throroughly enjoyable and served well both as a fitting farewell to Rita's kids, and also to setting the stage for the season. With ten episodes to go, the season is starting to shape up pretty well, and i am looking forward to seeing Dexter Morgan's adventures continue in the following episodes.
Until next time, ciao!
